    A TV-Gaussian prior for infinite-dimensional Bayesian inverse problems and its numerical implementations

    Many scientific and engineering problems require to perform Bayesian inferences in function spaces, in which the unknowns are of infinite dimension. In such problems, choosing an appropriate prior distribution is an important task. In particular we consider problems where the function to infer is subject to sharp jumps which render the commonly used Gaussian measures unsuitable. On the other hand, the so-called total variation (TV) prior can only be defined in a finite dimensional setting, and does not lead to a well-defined posterior measure in function spaces. In this work we present a TV-Gaussian (TG) prior to address such problems, where the TV term is used to detect sharp jumps of the function, and the Gaussian distribution is used as a reference measure so that it results in a well-defined posterior measure in the function space. We also present an efficient Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to draw samples from the posterior distribution of the TG prior. With numerical examples we demonstrate the performance of the TG prior and the efficiency of the proposed MCMC algorithm

    Naturally Occurring Heat Shock (HS) during Pupation Induces Abnormal Wing Development in Drosophila; We Examined Factors Affecting the Severity of This Induction. the Proportion of HS-Surviving Adults with Abnormal Wings Varied with HS Duration and Intensity, and with the Pupal Age or Stage at HS Administration. Pretreatment (PT), Mild Hyperthermia Delivered Before HS, Usually Protected Development Against HS. Gradual Heating Resembling Natural Thermal Regimes Also Protected Wing Development Against Thermal Disruption. Because of the Roles of the Wings in Flight and Courtship and in View of Natural Thermal Regimes that Drosophila Experience, Both HS-Induction of Wing Abnormalities and its Abatement by PT May Have Marked Effects on Drosophila Fitness in Nature. Because PT is Associated with Expression of Heat-Inducible Molecular Chaperones Such as Hsp70 in Drosophila, We Compared Thermal Disruption of Wing Development among Hsp70 Mutants as Well as among Strains Naturally Varying in Hsp70 Levels. Contrary to Expectations, Lines or Strains with Increased Hsp70 Levels Were No More Resistant to HS-Disruption of Wing Development Than Counterparts with Lower Hsp70 Levels. in Fact, Wing Development Was More Resistant to HS in Hsp70 Deletion Strains Than Control Strains. We Suggest that, While High Hsp70 Levels May Aid Cells in Surviving Hyperthermia, High Levels May Also Overly Stimulate or Inhibit Numerous Signaling Pathways Involved in Cell Proliferation, Maturation and Programmed Death, Resulting in Developmental Failure

    The role of natural gas in setting electricity prices in Europe

    The EU energy and climate policy revolves around enhancing energy security and affordability, while reducing the environmental impacts of energy use. The European energy transition has been at the centre of debate following the post-pandemic surge in power prices in 2021 and the energy crisis following the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war. Understanding the extent to which electricity prices depend on fossil fuel prices (specifically natural gas) is key to guiding the future of energy policy in Europe. To this end, we quantify the role of fossil-fuelled vs. low-carbon electricity generation in setting wholesale electricity prices in each EU-27 country plus Great Britain (GB) and Norway during 2015-2021. We apply econometric analysis and use sub/hourly power system data to estimate the marginal share of each electricity generation type. The results show that fossil fuel-based power plants set electricity prices in Europe at approximately 58% of the time (natural gas 39%) while generating only 34% of electricity (natural gas 18%) a year. The energy transition has made natural gas the main electricity price setter in Europe, with gas determining electricity prices for more than 80% of the hours in 2021 in several countries such as Belgium, GB, Greece, Italy, and the Netherlands. Hence, Europe’s electricity markets are highly exposed to the geopolitical risk of gas supply and natural gas price volatility, and the economic risk of currency exchange

    Increased target volume and hydrogen content in [11C]CH4 production

    Introduction High starting radioactivity is usually advantageous for producing radiopharmaceuticals with high specific radioactivity. However, the [11C]CH4 yields from N2-H2 gas target fall short from theoretical amounts, as calculated from the cross section for the well-known 14N(p,α)11C nuclear reaction1. The beneficial effect of increased target chamber temperature on [11C]CH4 yields has recently been brought forward by us2 and others3. In addition to the temperature effect, our attention has also been on the hydrogen content factor. This study intends to examine the N2-H2 target performance in a substantially larger target chamber and at higher temperatures than our setup before and compare the results to the existing data. Materials and Methods Aluminium bodied custom design target chamber is used in fixed 17 MeV proton beam irradiations. Target chamber is equipped with heating elements and cooling circuit for temperature control. In addition to the target chamber body temperature, the target gas loading pressure and irradiation current can be varied. The irradiation product is collected into an ad-sorbent trap that was immersed in a liquid argon cooling bath within a dose calibrator. Results and Conclusion Pursued data will show [11C]CH4 saturation yields (Ysat [GBq/µA]) at different irradiation and target parameters

    Association of Early Beta-amyloid Accumulation and Neuroinflammation Measured with [11C]PBR28 in Elderly Individuals Without Dementia

    OBJECTIVE: To examine whether early β-amyloid (Aβ) accumulation and metabolic risk factors are associated with neuroinflammation in elderly individuals without dementia. METHODS: We examined 54 volunteers (mean age 70.0, 56% women, 51% APOE ε4 carriers) with a TSPO-tracer [11C]PBR28 to assess neuroinflammation and with [11C]Pittsburgh compound B (PiB) to assess cerebral Aβ accumulation. [11C]PBR28 and [11C]PiB standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) were quantified in six regions of interests by using the cerebellar cortex as a pseudo-reference/reference region, respectively. Fasting venous glucose, insulin, and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) values were determined. Homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated. A subset of individuals (n=11) underwent CSF sampling, and Aβ40, Aβ42, total-tau, phospho-tau, soluble TREM2 and YKL-40 levels were measured. RESULTS: Among the whole study group, no significant association was found between [11C]PiB and [11C]PBR28 SUVR composite scores (slope 0.02, p=0.30). However, higher [11C]PiB binding was associated with higher [11C]PBR28 binding among amyloid negative ([11C]PiB composite score ≤1.5) (TSPO-genotype, age and sex adjusted slope 0.26, p=0.008) but not among amyloid positive participants (slope: -0.004, p=0.88). Higher CSF sTREM2 (rs 0.72, p=0.01) and YKL-40 (rs=0.63, p=0.04) concentrations were associated with a higher [11C]PBR28 composite score. Higher body mass index, HOMA-IR, and hs-CRP were associated with higher [11C]PBR28 binding in brain regions where Aβ accumulation is first detected in Alzheimer's disease (AD). CONCLUSIONS: While there was no association between amyloid and neuroinflammation in the overall study group, neuroinflammation was associated with amyloid among the subgroup at early stages of amyloid pathology
